Monday 1 February

Brigid, Abbess of Kildare, c.525

Thank you Lord for all the key workers who are working to keep our daily lives running as smoothly as possible through this pandemic: the workers who stack the shelves in our shops, collect our refuse, clean our hospitals and deliver our groceries. Please bless all who work behind the scenes to keep our community safe. Amen

Tuesday 2 February

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)

Jill Stolberg, Church School Distinctiveness Adviser, invites us to pray for headteachers in lockdown making difficult decisions every day for their communities, their pupils and their staff. Pray they will have wisdom, and compassion as they try to make good choices, and for resilience and energy for them to keep going.
You might want to pray particularly for headteachers of schools near to your home.

Wednesday 3 February

Anskar, Archbishop of Hamburg, Missionary in Denmark and Sweden, 865

Emma Sargeant, Growing Younger Adviser, invites us to pray for households who are home schooling and for adults who are supporting children and young people as they study in this way. Pray for the children and young people who are learning with these extra pressures, for those working by themselves and for those particularly who would have had GCSE and A level exams this year. We pray for peace and security around their futures.

Thursday 4 February

Gilbert of Sempringham, Founder of the Gilbertine Order, 1189

Today is World Cancer Day:
Lord, we pray for everyone fighting cancer. Give them hope, courage and comfort. Bless their family, friends and the medical team involved in their life. Amen

Friday 5 February

When financial stability crumbles, we pray:
Generous Lord,
deliver us from all envious thoughts,
and when we are tempted by the desire for wealth,
let us see your face;
for your abundance is enough to clothe our lack;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Saturday 6 February

The Martyrs of Japan, 1597

Birmingham city centre feels so strange
No people to see, no smiles exchanged
The shops are shut, the pubs have closed
Vulnerable businesses have been exposed

Being in lockdown is tough for us all
When loved ones can't come round to call
Maybe home isn't so homely
When you're sitting alone and feeling lonely

Lord give us hope and keep us strong
We will beat this virus, it won't be long
Keep our workers safe, bless them on their way
As they keep us safe from day to day

Lets think about others and help them out if we can
Because to 'love our neighbour' is a wonderful plan

Sunday 7 February

Sharon Prentis, Intercultural Mission Enabler & Dean of Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Affairs, invites us to pray on Racial Justice Sunday:

Almighty God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son.
Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you.

Monday 8 February

Restless with grief and fear,
the abandoned turn to you:
in every hour of trial,
good Lord, deliver us,
O God most holy, God most strong,
whose wisdom is the cross of Christ.

Tuesday 9 February

Our souls benefit when we spend time focusing on the good stuff in our lives. Today think of three things you are thankful for and thank the Lord for these.

Wednesday 10 February

Scholastica, sister of Benedict, Abbess of Plombariola, c.543

Prayer today is inspired by Psalm 95:1-3

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
For the Lord is the great God,
the great King above all gods.

Thursday 11 February

Lord, help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I together can’t handle. Amen

Friday 12 February

Today we pray for accountants who with so many businesses under stress are finding that they are having to provide not just financial facts but a counselling service too.

Saturday 13 February

Sometimes it’s the smallest act that makes the biggest impact.

Lord, in these difficult times, help us to think of others and what they may be going through. Even a smile or a kind word may help them through the day.

Sunday 14 February

Cyril and Methodius, Missionaries to the Slavs, 869 and 885

Prayer today is inspired by the song 'Thank You Lord' by Don Moen
'I come before you today
and there's just one thing that I want to say
Thank you Lord'

You can watch this on YouTube.

Monday 15 February

Sigfrid, Bishop, Apostle of Sweden, 1045

Prayer today is inspired by the music 'Holy is the true light' performed by The Birmingham Cathedral Choir.

You can listen to this on YouTube.

Tuesday 16 February

Lent is a time of fasting and devotions towards God. While preparing your Shrove Tuesday pancakes:
Add sugar to your pancake and thank God for something ‘sweet’ or good in your life;
God intended life to be good, but it is often mixed with tears. Add lemon juice to your pancake. Tell God about something ‘bitter’ or difficult in your life.

Wednesday 17 February
Ash Wednesday

Janani Luwum, Archbishop of Uganda, Martyr, 1977

Together we pray this prayer for Lent:

Holy God,
our lives are laid open before you:
rescue us from the chaos of sin
and through the death of your Son
bring us healing and make us whole
in Jesus Christ our Lord

Thursday 18 February

Teach us, good Lord,
to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost;
to fight and not to heed the wounds;
to toil and not to seek for rest;
to labour and not to seek for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do your will.

Friday 19 February

Lord, when I fall, You lift me up
When I'm weak, You are strong
When I'm lost, You are the way
When I face problems, You comfort me.
You are everything to me.
You are my Lord and You are Faithful
I am yours and You are mine

Saturday 20 February

Today we pray inspired by Psalm 62:5-8

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I shall not be shaken.
My salvation and my honour depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

Sunday 21 February

In our close relationship with God, it's important to thank Him for the blessings you receive.

Today we pray inspired by Psalm 9:1

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

Monday 22 February

God of Hope,
in these times of change,
unite our nation
and guide our leaders with your wisdom.
Give us courage to overcome our fears,
and help us to build a future
in which all may prosper and share;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Tuesday 23 February

Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, Martyr, c.155

Janet Chapman, St Laurence invites us to pause and give thanks to God for His creation.
Each person is special to God, but each tree, each flower, each blade of grass, each seed, all wonderfully and carefully made, let us treasure them, may they gladden our hearts. Let us praise God for His creation.

Wednesday 24 February

O good Jesus,
Word of the Father and
brightness of his glory,
whom angels desire to behold:
teach me to do your will
that, guided by your Spirit,
I may come to that blessed city of
everlasting day,
where all are one in heart and mind,
where there is safety and eternal peace,
happiness and delight,
where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
world without end.

Thursday 25 February

Lord in heaven, hear my prayer,
Keep me in your loving care.
Be my guide in all I do.
Bless all those who love me, too

Sunday 28 February

Thank you Lord for the roof over my head, food on my table and shoes on my feet. Forgive me when I complain and forget that I am blessed.
