Initial actions your church can take when starting your journey towards reaching net zero carbon and caring for the environment.
- Agree a Parish Environment Policy as a PCC
All PCCs are encouraged to agree a Parish Environment Policy, to ensure that environmental concerns are taken into account in all aspects of parish life. Download a template policy, which you can tailor to your own church.
- Appoint a Parish Environment Contact
Parish Environment Contacts can join your deanery network of environment volunteers, led by the Deanery Environment Champion, and receive the latest information about creation care resources and initiatives.
- Register with Eco Church
Eco Church is a national award scheme with resources designed to equip your church to express your care for God’s world. Many churches in CofE Birmingham have already registered and achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold Eco Church awards. All churches are encouraged to register and start working towards an Eco Church Award.
- Start to plan your church’s journey towards net zero carbon
Some churches have already achieved net zero carbon emissions, but for many this will be a longer term journey that starts with smaller steps.- Start by reading the CofE's 'Practical Guide to Net Zero Carbon' for churches
- The CofEB has also devleoped a template Net Zero Carbon Action Plan document that churches can use to develop a longer term strategy to reduce emissions.
- Most churches will also need to gain professional advice if you are considering larger scale projects to your buildings or heating systems. Contact Ben Smith for initial advice if you are planning a larger project to reduce emissions at your church.
