The Rt Revd Dr Michael Volland, Bishop of Birmingham, is lacing up his running shoes once again to take part in the Great Birmingham Run 2025. Having completed last year’s half marathon, Bishop Michael is returning to the streets of the city on Sunday, 4 May, to raise funds for Thrive Together Birmingham, a charity dedicated to tackling poverty and supporting communities.
A Passion for Running
Bishop Michael’s journey with running began in his school days, but it wasn’t until his mid-40s that he took it seriously. Signing up for a half marathon reignited his passion, and he quickly progressed to ultramarathons, completing multiple races, including the 100km Race to the Stones. Now training for his 17th ultramarathon, he describes running as a “gift from God”, providing space for prayer, reflection, and joy.
Running for a Cause
Reflecting on last year’s event, Bishop Michael shared how the Great Birmingham Run 2024 was a fantastic introduction to the city. “It was a beautiful day with a superb atmosphere, and the support on the streets was incredible,” he said. This year, he is running for Thrive Together Birmingham, a charity that works with churches and individuals to help those on the margins of society.
“I believe that God loves Birmingham and the people who live here, so I am committed to playing my part in building a flourishing Birmingham,” he added.
Encouraging Others to Get Moving
Despite his busy role as Bishop of Birmingham, he makes time for running, seeing it as essential to both his physical and spiritual well-being. He encourages others to try it, saying,
“You don’t have to run far or fast just 20 minutes down the road and back can make a difference.”
