Bishop's Comment: 'One more step along the world I go'

2nd August 2021

The lyrics of this journeying hymn by Daniel Shiells with its bouncy tune are often sung with passion and meaning in rousing school assemblies.

I hope it will catch your imagination afresh as you walk forward into summer holidays and a resetting of life for the autumn.

You may have seen Clare Balding’s and Alex Scott’s evening BBC TV programme rounding up the day’s Olympic triumphs and tragedies with the stories of participants’ gradual and determined build up to the great day. There can be seen the patterns of tentative beginning, family and team support, practising, training, accepting guidance, facing success and failure, and always learning along the way.

This awful pandemic requires a journey from the old things to the new. Keeping with the sports theme, you may not be an athlete, but applying the principle of “Couch to 5k” in any desired action or project, start exactly where you are and gently increase in capacity and confidence.

Ask Lord Jesus to keep travelling along with you, and for his courage and love. Leap and sing again, if not readily in body, then in mind, heart and spirit.
