Statement from the Bishops of Birmingham and Aston on the Appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury
'For such a time as this!' In God's time and in God's purposes.
We welcome today’s announcement that Dame Sarah Mullally is to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. We give thanks for her faithfulness to Christ and her willingness to serve his Church in this new calling.
In her words today she reminded us that we do not undertake the work of God in our own strength, but in prayerful dependence on him. That resonates deeply with our own diocesan priority of prayer — for apart from him, we can do nothing.
We are committed to working alongside Archbishop-designate Sarah in gospel partnership, seeking together the renewal of Christ’s Church and the flourishing of God’s mission in our communities, and in our nation.
Please join us in praying for Dame Sarah as she prepares to take up this ministry.
The Rt. Revd Dr Michael Volland
