As Bishops in the Diocese of Birmingham, we are grieved by the deepening tensions and violence in the Middle East, particularly involving Israel and Iran. We acknowledge the complexity of these events, the suffering they cause, and the fear they spread, across borders and into our own communities.
We hold in prayer all those directly affected: the innocent, the displaced, the grieving, and those who live daily with fear. We pray too for those in positions of power, that their decisions might be shaped by wisdom, restraint, and a longing for peace.
We are also mindful of the ripples felt here in our own region. Many in our city and diocese carry deep connections to the Middle East, through heritage, family, or faith. In these days, we encourage our churches to be places of listening, welcome, and compassion. The path of Christ is not one of division, but of reconciliation.
As followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we resist the pull toward despair or hostility. Instead, we renew our commitment to prayer, to peace-making, and to hope.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
