CofE Birmingham Net Zero Carbon Action Plan

The Church of England Birmingham has taken a significant step towards environmental responsibility with the endorsement of its Net Zero Carbon Action Plan. Approved by the Diocesan Synod in November 2024, the plan sets out a clear path to achieving net zero carbon emissions across the diocese by 2030.

This ambitious initiative encompasses churches, church halls, Voluntary Aided and Multi-Academy Trust church schools, clergy housing, Birmingham Cathedral, the diocesan office, and work-related travel. Recognising the scale of this challenge, the plan prioritises specific actions up to 2025 while establishing the foundations for long-term progress from 2026 to 2030.

A key aspect of achieving net zero is encouraging a culture shift across the CofE Birmingham community. Clear and consistent communication will play a crucial role in ensuring that churches and associated organisations are engaged in the process.

The estimated net carbon footprint for 2024 is 6,464 CO2e tonnes, with church schools contributing 39% of this total and churches and church halls accounting for 35%. By implementing year-on-year reductions, the action plan aims to create lasting sustainability and environmental responsibility across the CofE Birmingham.

Through collaborative efforts and a shared commitment to change, CofE Birmingham is striving to make a tangible impact in response to the climate crisis, ensuring that its buildings and activities align with a more sustainable future.
