Confirmation of Election of the Bishop of Birmingham

The Confirmation of Election of the Revd Dr Michael Volland as Bishop of Birmingham, took place in London, on Wednesday, 22 November 2023.

The Confirmation of Election is a legal process and the wording used in the service has a long history. Today a somewhat modernised version is used , though it retains its origins in medieval canon law. The Archbishops Vicar General , sitting as a court of law, decides on whether the procedural steps have been properly carried out so the election of the new diocesan bishop can be confirmed.

Though the conclusion of this service marks the moment at which the legal functions of office become vested in the new diocesan bishop, Michael will not begin his public ministry until the new year, focusing next on his consecration as bishop, at Canterbury Cathedral, on Thursday, 30 Nov.

The Rt. Revd Anne Hollinghurst, Bishop of Aston, continues in her authorised role as Acting Bishop of Birmingham till late February 2023. Michael will take up public ministry as the 10th Bishop of Birmingham after his installation and welcome at Birmingham Cathedral in 2024.

Michael is currently on retreat, a private period which leads up to his consecration on Thursday. Michael is grateful for your prayers for energy and wisdom, as well as for his family, as they prepare for this new season in their lives.
