Diocesan Synod 2024
On Saturday, 16th November 2024, members of the Diocesan Synod gathered at St Barnabas, Erdington for a time of worship, information sharing and discussion. A warm introduction from the Vicar of St Barnabas parish church and a formal welcome by Bishop Michael created a welcoming atmosphere. The meeting then began with a service of Holy Communion.
Key items on the agenda were:
Presidential Address
Bishop Michael opened the session with his Presidential Address, addressing significant and timely issues that affect both the diocese and wider society. In particular, he reminded Synod of the profound importance of acknowledging the pain of victims and survivors of abuse.
Environmental Commitments
Ben Smith, the Diocese's Net Zero Carbon Project Manager, shared developments in the diocese's net zero carbon plan, covering parsonages, schools, churches and the Diocesan Office. Catheryn Grylls provided a reminder of the spiritual dimension of this work, highlighting the importance of fostering a deeper connection with God in every aspect of the Church's work. Her message reminded us all to keep faith at the centre of all deliberations.
Strategic Focus
Jan Smart, Diocesan Secretary, shared the news that Birmingham has been awarded funding from the National Church to support our work in "growing churches at the heart of each community". This funding will bring capacity to develop a 10 year plan for growth and sustainability an also funding for mission in support of the work of Anchor Church joining with St Mary & St Ambrose, Edgbaston to develop a new church together. Jan shared a video about this new project that can be viewed here.
Houses of Clergy and Laity
During an extended coffee break, members of each house met with their newly elected Chairs: Toby Crowe, Chair of the House of Clergy and Anesu Muyambi, Chair of the House of Laity.
2025 Budget
Karen Preece, Finance Director, presented the 2025 budget which was accepted unanimously by Synod members. The budget continues to show a significant operating deficit but there are plans being developed, as shared earlier in the strategy presentation, to regain financial sustainability over the next 10 years. Karen reminded Synod members this will include the need to increase income from Common Fund to at least the pre-Covid levels. Bishop Michael has created a video message for all PCCs to encourage us as we work together towards financial sustainability. Watch here.
A Unified Vision
As the Synod concluded, attendees left with a shared sense of purpose and direction. Bishop Michael reflected on the gathering, stating, "The work of the Synod is not just about decision-making; it is about shaping the future of our Church and its mission in Birmingham and our region."
