Supporting CofE Birmingham Churches in the Journey to Net Zero Carbon

The CofE Birmingham are committed as a diocese to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and to help meet this ambitious goal, a range of different Net Zero Carbon (NZC) grants and funding schemes have been introduced.  These grants are available for churches, cathedrals, schools, and clergy housing, supporting efforts to reduce environmental impact and achieve greater sustainability.

Contrary to a single overarching grant fund, the CofE Commissioners has rolled out multiple initiatives designed to meet the specific needs of its diverse churches. Churches across the CofE Birmingham are encouraged to explore these opportunities as they look to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the wider environmental mission.

Local Demonstrator Projects Leading the Way

In the CofE Birmingham, two churches have been selected as part of the national NZC Demonstrator Project: St Germain’s Church, Edgbaston, and St Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham. These churches are pioneering sustainable practices, and serve as valuable examples for other churches across the country.

Further details about the demonstrator projects and how these churches are leading by example can be found in the official press release from the Church of England here.

Guidance and Support Available

Churches throughout the Birmingham diocese can access a wide range of resources and practical guidance to make their buildings more environmentally sustainable and reduce emissions. From grants to expert advice, these tools are available to churches that are ready to take their first steps or continue their journey toward net zero carbon.

For more detailed guidance on projects and funding, the Church of England's website offers a wealth of information and resources on the NZC mission here.

By utilising these resources and funding opportunities, CofE Birmingham churches can contribute to the Church of England’s wider mission of caring for God's creation while securing a greener future for the next generation.
