Supporting Schools on the Path to Net Zero Carbon

The Church of England Birmingham is taking meaningful steps to support church schools in their journey to net zero carbon, with the appointment of Jill Stolberg as the part-time Net Zero Carbon Schools Officer in May 2024. This role, funded through a Starter Grant from the CofE Net Zero Carbon Programme, is designed to help schools actively reduce emissions and integrate environmental responsibility into their ethos.

Jill brings a wealth of experience to the role, building on her existing relationships with schools as the Church School Distinctiveness Officer. Her work focuses on visiting schools to gather information, promoting CofE Net Zero Carbon resources, and encouraging a cultural shift towards environmental care. Through these efforts, she is empowering schools to make sustainable choices that will have a lasting impact.

Schools are encouraged to take practical steps by joining the Let’s Go Zero campaign, developing Climate Action Plans, and using the Count Your Carbon tool for annual reporting. These initiatives provide schools with clear strategies to track and reduce their carbon footprints over time.

Jill’s direct support has already been invaluable, offering guidance and resources tailored to the needs of individual schools. By equipping staff and students with the knowledge and tools to embrace sustainability, CofE Birmingham is ensuring that future generations are prepared to care for the planet.

The work being done across church schools highlights the importance of collaboration in tackling the climate crisis. Through education, practical action, and a shared commitment to change, CofE Birmingham is leading the way in creating a more sustainable future.
