At CofE Birmingham, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment is a key priority. Unconscious Bias Awareness Training has been introduced to help individuals recognise and address the biases that shape their interactions and decision-making to support this commitment.
Unconscious bias is a natural part of how our brains work. We instinctively feel more comfortable with the familiar and may be wary of what is unfamiliar. While these biases are automatic, they can influence our perceptions, actions, and choices in ways we may not realise. Through training, CofE Birmingham aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and awareness needed to challenge these biases and embrace inclusivity in all aspects of church life and leadership.
The training has been rolled out to all CofE Birmingham employees, those training for ministry, and individuals in leadership roles. It is also open to anyone who wishes to take part. Developed with input from across CofE Birmingham, the course explores different forms of unconscious bias, their impact, and practical ways to overcome them.
Participants have found the training transformative, gaining a deeper understanding of how to be intentionally inclusive in their communities. Many have reflected on how recognising their own biases has helped them ‘unlearn’ ingrained perspectives, leading to more open, equitable, and diverse environments within their churches and workplaces.
Unconscious Bias Awareness Training is not just an opportunity for personal growth. It is a missional imperative that strengthens relationships, fosters understanding, and creates spaces where everyone feels valued and included.
